Victoria, BC – The Victoria Salmon Kings, proud affiliate of the Vancouver Canucks and Manitoba Moose, announced today that they have signed forward Matt Stefanishion for the 2010-11 season.

The Daysland, AB native spent the majority of his 2009-10 campaign in the ECHL split between the Alaska Aces and Charlotte Checkers. Stefanishion began the season in Anchorage where he scored 20 points (14g-6a) in 30 games while accruing 101 minutes in penalties. Following a trade to Charlotte he finished the year with 25 games as a Checker recording 18 points (7g-11a) and 76 penalty minutes. Stefanishion dressed for all 11 Kelly Cup Playoff games in Charlotte tallying three goals with one assist for four points and 33 penalty minutes.

“Matt plays on the edge and has the ability to change the tide of any game,” General Manager and Head Coach Mark Morrison said. “He is well known as an agitator with an offensive upside. He will be a fan favorite with his tenacious style of play.”

The 26-year-old forward began the 2008-09 season with the ECHL’s Fresno Falcons, competing in 19 games and tallying 17 points (10g-7a) while serving 68 minutes in penalties. Stefanishion helped the Aces reach the seventh game of the Kelly Cup Final that spring registering nine points (6g-3a) and 81 minutes in penalties in 16 contests. He also spent 15 games on call-up in 2008-09 to the AHL’s Hartford Wolf Pack where he notched one goal and 17 penalty minutes.

The 6-3, 225 lb. Stefanishion began his professional career with two seasons (2006-07 and 2007-08) in the ECHL between Fresno, the South Carolina Stingrays and Reading Royals. In 125 career ECHL games during that span he notched 79 points (36g-43a) and 350 minutes in penalties. He also spent three games in the AHL during the 2006-07 campaign with the Hershey Bears where he recorded no points or penalty minutes.

For his four-year professional career Stefanishion has dressed in 238 games amassing 149 points (76g-73a) and 681 minutes in penalties.

Stefanishion had a four-year junior career split between the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (Melville Millionaires and Estevan Bruins) and NCAA (Ferris State University). The forward totalled 128 points (53g-75a) and 410 penalty minutes in 112 career SJHL games. While at school he played in 57 games accruing 21 goals and 13 assists for 34 points with 125 minutes in penalties. Stefanishion was named to the SJHL’s First All-Star Team in 2003-04, while being nominated to the Central Collegiate Hockey Association’s (CCHA) All-Rookie Team in 2004-05.
