Victoria, BC – The Manitoba Moose, the AHL affiliate of the Victoria Salmon Kings, announced today that Claude Noel has been named the sixth Head Coach in Manitoba history.

The native of Kirkland Lake, ON joins the Moose after completing his third season with the NHL’s Columbus Blue Jackets, starting the season as an Assistant Coach before taking over from Ken Hitchcock as Head Coach on February 3, 2010.  The Blue Jackets finished the season 10-8-6 under Noel. During his three years with the club, the Blue Jackets compiled a record of 107-102-15-22 in 246 games.

Prior to joining the Blue Jackets, Noel spent four seasons in the AHL as Head Coach of the Milwaukee Admirals. In 320 regular season games, he coached the Admirals to a 183-94-12-31 record, three 100-point seasons and two West Division titles. Noel also amassed a 33-21 record in the Calder Cup Playoffs, including two appearances in the Finals. During Milwaukee’s 2003-04 campaign, Noel coached the club to a 46-24-7-3 regular season record, and a 16-6 mark in the playoffs to lead the team to its first Calder Cup Championship. For his efforts, Noel was honoured with the Louis A.R. Pieri Memorial Award for the AHL’s Coach of the Year.

Noel made his coaching debut in the ECHL during the 1990-91 season with the Roanoke Valley Rebels, and followed up as the Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations for the ECHL’s Dayton Bombers from 1991-93. Following his time in Dayton, Noel joined the International Hockey League’s (IHL) Kalamazoo Wings as an Assistant Coach in 1993, before being promoted to Head Coach during the 1995-96 campaign. After three seasons behind the bench in Kalamazoo, Noel joined the Admirals as an Assistant Coach and in 2002-03 was named ECHL Coach of the Year with the Toledo Storm before returning to Milwaukee as Head Coach prior to the 2003-04 season.

As a player, Noel spent most of his career in the AHL and IHL with the Hershey Bears, Toledo Goaldiggers and Kalamazoo Wings. He appeared in seven NHL games with the Washington Capitals during the 1979-80 season. Noel was named the IHL’s Most Valuable Player in 1982-83 after leading Toledo to a Turner Cup Championship. He also was a member of the Calder Cup Champion Bears during the 1979-80 season.
